[WoW] Mob [Dec. 27th, 2009|01:00 am]

nkuvu
I think I've finally determined that when people on Wowhead forums say "mob," they mean an individual foe. Not... you know, a mob of foes.

Earlier I spoke about people taking on several "mobs" at once, and it baffled me. But today I saw someone refer to Mor'Ladim as a "level 30 elite mob." He's just one foe (he doesn't even have any friends aside from the random foes in the area). I saw someone else say that a Frost mage should use Frost Bolt on a "mob" as it approaches. Frost Bolt is a single target spell.

After many years on the internet, I'm pretty used to people using the wrong word. What I typically see, however, is the homonym problem (they're/their/there, et cetera). Players in World of Warcraft seem to have taken that to a completely new level. A ninja is a thief. A mob is one foe. And dog only knows what other words they're using to mean something completely different.

I've seen some new homophone problems in the game, such as someone asking to be "run threw" an area. But the total word replacement has made it difficult for me to communicate -- or at least understand what it is they're trying to say. I can make mental adjustments when someone says "looking for the bank? It's over their." Even if it makes me cringe. When language is mangled such that its meaning is difficult if not impossible to decipher... bah.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Completely unrelated to language, I spent a whole lot of the evening running around Darkshore with Avelessa (level 42 paladin). Just running all over and throwing out random heals and buffs and every once in a while, rushing in to save the day when a player was getting overwhelmed. One player asked in general chat why it wasn't more common to have high level characters running around helping. I didn't answer, but if I had, I would have said that it's a pretty unrewarding job. There were a large number of people who thanked me in some form or another ("ty" being the most common, with a few whispers of "tnx" and even one "thank you"). So the whole thing made me feel pretty good, but Avelessa didn't get a single experience point, and made just enough cash to cover the repairs to her armor. It was also depressing when I ran up and was too late -- seeing the characters die as Avelessa was still casting a heal, or watching the character run away from the foes as Avelessa was trying to catch up enough to be able to heal. So I doubt it's something I'll want to do often, but it was certainly entertaining for tonight.

And unrelated to Darkshore or language, I've been trying to get Bellarys leveled up a bit more. Bellarys is my mage, and was stuck at level 20 for a very long time. I had decided that I didn't like mages enough, and so she would do nothing more than fish, but a lot of my characters have benefited greatly from specialization. That is, going through and paying money to unlearn talents, then focusing solely on one aspect. Transforming my paladin from Holy/Retribution/Protection to just Retribution was a huge help. So was transforming my Balance/Restoration/Feral druid to just Feral. So I decided that I should take a look at my mage again. And like my other characters, her talent points were all over the place. Some in frost, some in arcane, some in fire.

I've set Bellarys up to be a frost mage, and it's worked... acceptably well. It's not quite as mana intensive as fire was, and the freezing or slowing of enemies has really helped with the whole survival thing. For many foes, Bellarys can go through the whole fight without being hit once. And the damage from the blizzard is pretty impressive. For the most part, it's been a Frost Bolt party, with occasional Frost Novas and Blink-ing to keep Bellarys away from the foes. But she just got to level 26, so Cone of Cold is now available. I'm still contemplating the whole Arcane magic line, but frost has been working fairly well so far. It's not as easy as my paladin or druid, but specializing has been a lot better than the mish-mash of talents I had set up previously.

And even though Bellarys has been level 20 for a long time, I just found out that she can learn the Teleport skills to Stormwind, Ironforge, and the Exodar. It won't be until level 30 for the teleport to Darnassus, and it won't be until level 50 before she can learn to bring others along. And it costs roughly 9 silver (depending on reputation, like most things) for each cast. But it has been a huge time saver, and makes me feel like having a mage around is a nice thing. Unfortunately it won't be until level 70 that Bellarys can bring others to Dalaran, and even then, I can't bring my other characters. So it looks like I will still have to spend gold to get my characters there (mostly because setting the hearthstone to Dalaran, and then using the portals to capital cities is so incredibly convenient).

And unrelated to everything above, I'm tired. I sleep now.

BEEF LOG [Dec. 26th, 2009|11:42 am]

My mother's prank gift to her son & both sons-in-law. :D She said she should've wrapped it with a pair of oranges, but thought that was a bit over the top for a holiday during which we celebrate Christ's birth.

Personally I think Jesus might have snickered, too.

Watching planes land [Dec. 24th, 2009|08:07 am]

I have never had much leisure time at the Memphis airport before, so this is the first time I've noticed that the terminals have an upper deck, perfect for watching planes land.

[WoW] Ding! [Dec. 21st, 2009|11:28 pm]

The quests in Duskwallow have high rewards, and none of the ones I did were particularly difficult. But this meant that Avelessa went from almost-38 all the way to level 40 this evening. Yay!

And I'm really glad for the plate -- the chain mail pieces Avelessa had found/made were very bright and gaudy, but they were the best available. For the record, a before and after plate pic (except the gloves and shoulders, I forgot to take a "before" pic for those):
snippy cut for overly large pic (but it's late and I don't feel like making it more smaller-er) )

I'm very pleased with this.

[music |"As Light Through Leaves"++Jeff Coffin++Bloom]

Well, I'm home. Bryan & Ganon are not; they're still in Dallas staying with the Texas Grandminions. I had to come home because I have to work today.

It's a little depressing that I'll be entirely alone for most of Christmas week. It wouldn't be much different if the boys were here because I'm working; when I'm doing a run of 3 12-hour shifts in a row, I hardly do anything except sleep and work. It makes me feel very alone regardless of whether there's anyone here or not.

Met Q in Memphis yesterday. We hit Sephora (I GOT THE COOLEST EYELINER EVER) & Ulta (Burt's Bees almond milk salve for my hands) & Wendy's before she headed home to get some sleep and I drove to Whole Foods. My Christmas gift to myself, since I do not have Bryan or Ganon this week, is nice work lunches. I got myself some apples, peanut butter, cheese, bread, and several of their pre-prepared, refrigerated dishes. I'm going to put together cute little lunches so I have something really nice every night at work.

This week & next week are my last nights on the orthopedic floor. After that I move to the ICU, where I will be orienting on days for a short while, then back to nights. I'm nervous!

Still playing Gowalla. I get "into" a lot of internet things, but I can tell when one of them "clicks" with me and will remain a mainstay of my internet presence. Livejournal (took me about 2 months to warm up), Twitter (INSTANT LOVE), and Gowalla (instant obsession) are 3 of those.

Off to eat a peanut butter & jelly on challah bread.

[WoW] Alt of the week [Dec. 21st, 2009|12:54 am]

nkuvu
This week, it's my paladin Avelessa.

My druid Sybryn was getting close to level 35, when I can get the next level up in Enchanting. But at this level, enchanting hasn't been very interesting. Not only is it a pain to get the materials, but the increases have been underwhelming (oh yay, add a whole 3 to my stamina, and maybe +10 armor (exaggeration, but... yeah. Nothing special with the enchants)).

So I started thinking about leveling up my paladin, who is a blacksmith. I've been having a lot more use out f the blacksmithing than the enchanting, and I like the mining a lot more than disenchanting to get random things. And I wanted something a bit different than druid, because I have the attention span of a squirrel.

In two or three days, I've brought my paladin up from level 30 to level 37 (and almost to level 38 this evening). The Artisan level of Blacksmithing was something I was really excited for, but I didn't get a whole lot of new things to be able to make. Just a couple pieces of plate armor. But at level 40, Avelessa can learn to wear plate armor. On top of that, she can specialize in either Armorsmithing or Weaponsmithing. So I'm very much looking forward to that. And she's been working with mithril, so I'm enjoying the blacksmithing a whole lot.

Oh, and of course I'm enjoying the game play. I spent a gold piece and had Avelessa unlearn all of her skills, and invested all points into Retribution. Like my warlock, it feels a bit cheesy since Retribution is very common (and Drain Tanking on warlocks is pretty common as well). But it's been very effective. In some situations, Avelessa was fighting foe after foe after foe followed by a mob of foes. And even with all of them at her level or higher, it hasn't been an issue. Mor'Ladim, for example, killed my dwarf warrior. Even though my warrior was three levels higher than Mor'Ladim (who is a level 30 elite). Avelessa dropped Mor'Ladim when she was level 31. Maybe 32.

Speaking of elite monsters, I've been half-heartedly doing the Winter Veil quests. Going up to Alterac Mountains wasn't too bad, especially once Avelessa could handle the level 33-36 foes up there. But the Abominable Greeeeeeeeeeeench (I have no idea how many e's there really are in his name), a level 36 elite, was still out of her league. Given the speed of leveling, I was planning on waiting for a bit, then taking on the Abominable critter. I really should have looked for a group, but I have zero experience with forming a party in town -- every group I've been in has been formed out in the middle of nowhere when people find they are doing the same thing as I am. But Avelessa was up in the area killing the lower level foes, mining when she could (more on that in a second) and generally having a decent time. Came up over a ridge, and there was a level ?? troll hunter (as in, a Horde player, clarifying because I was also killing troll hunter NPCs in south east Arathi earlier).

At first I thought he was being annoying -- I aggroed a yeti, hit it twice, and zoom... in swooped the hunter's pet, killing off the yeti. I thanked the player, then continued on. He followed and did the same. Then he pointed at the Abominable Greeench, and then pointed at Avelessa. The hunter cheered after I sighed at the Abominable Greench. So I attacked the Greench, and swoop, the hunter and pet came in and killed the Greench. I bowed and thanked the hunter, he waved, and we went off on our merry ways.

I'm still very pleased with the outcome of this. Without being able to actually speak to each other, we made a group and the Horde player helped me accomplish a quest I would not have been able to do otherwise. Such a nice feeling.

Especially since I've been having such a rotten time with the mining. I've had high level characters prance past my characters while they're fighting to get to an ore vein. I've mined several ore veins only to find that some chump took the metal and left the stone. And in general with the Winter Veil quests in the area, there's a fair draw of high level players so the mines are just more scarce overall.

The worst bit, though, is that I stole an iron ore from a Horde player. I honestly didn't mean to, just didn't see the character at all (we were in the yeti cave just north west of Southshore). The other character slapped Avelessa, and said NO, which made me laugh (akin to disciplining a puppy). But once I realized what she meant, I felt bad. Of course I couldn't even explain that I hadn't seen her. The only positive side of it is that we both progressed deeper into the cave, and I was able to help her fight some yetis -- and stood back from the next iron vein we found. I think that she understood that the first vein was a mistake on my part, since she waved farewell when she decided to head out of the cave. Later, I was still mucking about in the cave and the same player came back and cheered at Avelessa.

Still, it makes me want to delete a character, so I can make a Horde player so that for times like this I can later send a note. I know that most of the communication needed can be done via emote, but some things warrant full sentences.

For PvP servers it makes a whole lot of sense that Alliance and Horde can't talk to each other. For PvE... I often really wish I could at least communicate with the other player.

...this was going to be a short, quick entry. "Yay Avelessa is progressing quickly, getting close to level 40. Yay." Instead, here I am still typing. When I should be asleep already. Why am I still typing? Knock it off, self. Go to sleep!
